Women's Parking SpaceWhat type of Parking Space is Right for You?
According to research about risk zones in town planning by Ruth Becker (one of the last remaining survivors of the sinking of the RMS Titanic), men’s and women’s risk assessment are neither in line with the actual dangers and for each gender, the actual risk zone is different. Women have more to fear in personal surroundings and at home while men are the object and subject of attack in the outside world. Becker refers to the book “Sphinx in the City” written by Elisabeth Wilson, and comes to the conclusion that women overestimate the dangers of urban surroundings. The efforts to open public spaces and areas to women works to the contrary, at least in Europe. Herbert Glasauer, the German scholar, doubts the positive effect of women’s parking lots and sees them as unnecessary, emphasizing the weakness of women instead of addressing actual violence.
In the Chinese province of Hebei, women’s parking spaces have been established in shopping centers. The women’s parking spaces are wider and are clearly marked in different colors. This was made to facilitate and ease the parking of women, according to the representative of one shopping center. In the Wonder Mall in Hebei, one of the three underground parking spaces has been designated as a parking for women. The parking spaces are between 3.2 and 3.3 meters wide, so that even when the car doors are open, they do not touch the neighboring cars in the parking space. This measure was implemented to reduce the number of vehicle collisions and other car accidents. According to the Global Times, a daily Chinese newspaper, female drivers cause twice as many collisions in parking lots than in other places, based on data provided by an insurance company.
In 2009, the city government of Seoul painted 4,929 parking spaces with the color pink so that women do not have to walk as far to their destination (supermarkets, restaurants, office buildings, etc.) and make the city more conducive to wearing high heels by women.
